🩺 Patch (Event) Monitor – Patient Information

What is a Patch/Event Monitor?

A Patch or Event Monitor is a small, lightweight device that records your heart’s electrical activity over

several days (usually 7–14 days).
Your cardiologist uses it to detect irregular heart rhythms that may not appear during a regular ECG.

Before Your Appointment

  • Shower the morning of your appointment.
Do not apply lotions, creams, or body oils to your chest — they can interfere with the adhesive
     patch.

  • Wear a two-piece outfit (top and bottom) so we can easily place the monitor on your chest.

  • Bring your BC Services Card (CareCard) and an up-to-date list of your medications.

  • Avoid jewelry or metal necklaces during application.

During the Appointment

  • Small areas of your chest may be cleaned and gently shaved (if necessary) to help the patch stick.

  • The technologist will apply the adhesive patch and ensure the monitor is securely attached.

  • You’ll receive written instructions on:

    • How to care for the patch

    • How to press the event button if you feel symptoms (palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath, etc.)

    • How to record your activities and symptoms in the provided diary or app (if applicable)

While Wearing the Monitor

  • Keep the patch dry. Avoid swimming, saunas, or long showers. Quick showers may be allowed — please ask

       the technologist.

  • Continue your usual daily activities, unless advised otherwise.

  • If the patch loosens, press it gently back down. If it falls off completely, call our office for instructions.

  • Press the button whenever you feel symptoms, and note the date/time and what you were doing.

  • Do not remove the patch until the monitoring period is complete.

After the Monitoring Period

  • When your recording period is over:

    • Bring the monitor back during our opening hours .

  • Please ensure all accessories and diaries are returned promptly so we can analyze your results.

  • If your test ends on a weekend, please return the monitor the following Monday.

⚠️ Important

If the monitor or transmitter is lost or damaged, you may be responsible for replacement costs.

⚠️ Please note: If the monitor is dropped off outside of business hours and becomes lost, there will be a replacement

cost  for the device.
